Students in the
Upper Band learn a second foreign language from Year 8 concurrently with
their original Year 7 foreign language.
Students who wish
to learn French can choose to do so as an additional foreign language from
Year 7 with the "French Club" at lunch time and after school.
We have adopted an
approach which makes use of the elements of Somerset Total Communication
(STC). This is a multi-sensory
approach to improving communication and language learning. It involves audio, visual and
tactile/kinaesthetic stimuli, so we use computers, DVDs, Videos, CDs,
tapes, also signing, symbols and objects, as well as books and other
paper-based media. This means that
different learning styles are supported and students can retain new
language more easily. It also helps
them with English!
Able students will
follow an accelerated course leading to early entry GCSE in a language in
Year 9
Students not
intending to continue with MFL at KS4 will be offered the chance to gain a
recognised language qualification in year 9 if they are motivated and
demonstrate appropriate competence.
